PCB Solder Mask Colors: Does Color Affect Performance?

Does the color of your PCB really matter, or is it just about appearance?

Green is the color most people associate with PCBs, but today you can choose from 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸, 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝘆𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝘀. The question is, do these colors affect the performance of your board?

In most cases, the answer is 𝗻𝗼. The solder mask color has little to no impact on the electrical performance of a PCB. Its 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 of the board.

So why are there different colors?

The choice usually depends on the application, branding, readability, and inspection requirements. Green remains the industry standard because it 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Black gives products a premium appearance but can make visual inspection more challenging. White is often used in LED lighting applications, while blue and red are popular for prototypes and products where aesthetics matter.

When selecting a solder mask color, it's important to think beyond appearance. Consider how the board will be assembled, inspected, and used in its final environment.
